Start at the beginning continue to the end and then Stop

I'm going to start this Blog off on a good note with the last book I read. This book also happens to be the first book I have enjoyed after a 6 month reading rut. It's the book responsible for bringing me out of my rut and back to a place where I can now finally enjoy reading again. This book was chosen for a bookclub I attend by a good friend of mine with a mutual taste in books.

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

This wonderfully drawn book follows two teenagers in 1986 through young love. When the new girl Eleanor a curvy ginger kid with an unusual fashion sense arrives on the school bus for the first time, Park the half Asian kid with a love for comics lets her sit down beside him out of embarrassment for her. He doesn't know why he does this but their is something about Eleanor that is  intriguing to Park.

Park builds a relationship with Eleanor by lending her comic books which then progresses to mix tapes.

We learn as the story goes on of Eleanor's unstable home life. Park is pretty much the opposite of Eleanor in this regard except for a little lack of understanding on certain issues between himself and his father. Their lives couldn't be any more different. She's the weird girl that everyone picks on and he isn't the most popular kid in school but the popular kids like him. Despite their differences they find something in each other.

Much like first love this book will give you a mix of strong emotions. It is clear from reading Eleanor&Park that the author remembers what it felt like to be that young and in love and in reading her book you will be reminded of what it felt like too. I don't want to give too much away so I won't go into anymore detail. I will say this Read It. It is worth reading. Even members of the book club I attend who would not normally read YA loved this book in fact I have yet to meet anyone who didn't love this book. It is beautifully written, witty and intriguing. I was pleasantly surprised.

  2. What a wonderful thing to find a book that re-ignites the love of reading, a reading funk in a bookaholic is such a painful thing, you seek the magic of escapism and it doesn't happen... I'm so glad E&P and their wonderful small journey (yet such a big journey) did it for you.

  3. Yes! I totally agree with you about Eleanor & Park, I was completely hooked and found it to be one of those books that transport you to another time/place/empathetic reaction.
